She earned her Ph.D. in Transformative Studies, with an emphasis on communications and social media. Her dissertation examined the use of social networking sites within the collegiate classroom, specifically investigating whether students were able to comprehend, apply, and analyze public relations course material by using WordPress, Facebook, and Twitter.
Her M.A. is from The College of Saint Rose where she studied public communication, and her B.A. is from Utica College of Syracuse University where she earned a dual degree in English and journalism.
Upon accepting the position with Eastern Michigan University, Luttrell played a pivotal role in further developing new curricula for EMU’s undergraduate public relations program by creating four new courses necessary for success in the profession – The Agency, Integrated Campaigns, Social Media, and Crisis Communications. This is the second curriculum revision she has participated in.
Prior to joining EMU, Luttrell reviewed and revised the undergraduate public relations and advertising track at The College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York. These revisions were approved by the New York State Department of Education and commenced fall of 2009. The new courses offered in the communications department were based in the fundamentals of communications, coupled with newer techniques including social media and online trends.
Before teaching, Professor Luttrell held a career in the communications industry for more than a decade. Her work spanned multiple arenas including large corporations, government entities, not-for-profit organizations, and academic institutions.
She has created, developed and implemented diverse and results-oriented media relations programs specific to each sector with which she worked. In addition, she led three re-branding campaigns, designed four web sites, managed high-level crisis situations, and garnered media coverage that included hits with the New York Times, the CBS Evening News, and the Associated Press.
To stay active within the community and research field, Luttrell often serves as a presenter on issues related to communications, public relations, and social media. Professor Luttrell is a McNair Scholar mentor and also serves as the Faculty Advisor for the Eastern Michigan University Eleanor Wright PRSSA Chapter.
