With summer on its way, everyone is focused on getting back to that summer-ready bikini body we all forget about during the school year even though we said we wouldn’t. It’s OK! Summer is here and we’re ready to get back on the grind! Now that we don’t have to focus so much on school with mountains of stress, we can focus on getting back in shape.
Similar to how our bodies got out of shape during the school year, often times during the summer we let our minds get out of shape, too. Of course, there are summer classes, internships and jobs, but that doesn’t exercise our minds as much as we need. Just like our body suffers from not working it, so does our mind.
The summer is the perfect time to exercise our minds so we don’t lose all that focus and work we’ve done throughout the school year. The best part of the summer is that we get to utilize our skills the way we want.
Here are a few ways to keep your mind in shape this summer.
So cliché, I know, but summer really is the perfect time to read what you personally enjoy. For me, I like to read books about the “Self” and the lives of people. Others like to read suspense books or romance novels. No matter what you enjoy, let your mind work and relax at the same time. Even if it’s a magazine, reading will keep your mind sharp.
As a public relations major, writing during the summer is so important. It’s not that we’re going to lose our skills, but we won’t be improving them either. Whether you’re writing short stories, blog posts or even e-mails, exercising your skills is key to getting better.
3. Stay in tune.
Watch the news and be aware of what’s going on in the world around you. It’s easy to let the summer distract you from keeping up with current events until you go back to school, but that just won’t cut it. Keeping up with the news will keep your brain working and critically thinking about what’s happening in the “real world.” Even if you have to watch the “Discover” Snapchats every day to stay caught up on the news – it’s whatever works.
Since it is summer, you can still relax! Just remember to let yourself learn, too. There’s a happy medium for being successful this summer!
