Words of Wisdom for PR students

As Eagles get settled into classes, here are some quotes to provide a little motivation for those studying Public Relations.

1) A person who won’t read has no advantage over one who can’t read. —Mark Twain
Writing is a pertinent facet to PR, but taking the time to observe other writers is necessary to grow as a wordsmith.

2) A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on. — Winston Churchill
People often look for the negative first when judging a company, non-profit organization or high-profile celebrity.

3) “If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn’t thinking.” –George S. Patton
This WWII general had a knack for staying ahead of his enemies regarding tactics and battlefield maneuvering. His subordinates undoubtedly played a large role in his success. Keeping fresh ideas streaming throughout a team can be underrated when tasks need completion.

4)”The caterpillar does all the work but the butterfly gets all the publicity.” –George Carlin
An event, fundraiser or campaign may not give PR practitioners a lot of recognition. But, success doesn’t need to be highlighted to the masses to deserve personal satisfaction.

5)“Publicity, publicity, publicity is the greatest moral factor and force in our public life.” – Joseph Pulitzer
It appears the business of publicity is here to stay, according to this 19th century newspaper publisher.

6)“It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.” – Warren Buffet
When judging the risks of a campaign or slogan, perhaps this quote should be considered.

7)“Many a small thing has been made large by the right kind of advertising.” – Mark Twain
The goal of good PR is to tell a story that resonates with the intended audience. If done correctly, any story can become a sensation.

8)”Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind.” – Rudyard Kipling
However, I don’t think anyone has ever overdosed on Shakespeare.

Good luck with the semester and be sure to stay tuned for upcoming events from EMU’S PRSSA chapter.
