EMU PRSSA Presents: Travel and Tourism Panel

Are you interested in working in the Travel and Tourism Industry after graduation?

EMU PRSSA will be hosting a Travel and Tourism Panel on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 5:30pm. The Panel will take place in the EMU Student Center in room 304.

There will be two speakers at the event. Christine Laughren, who is the Manager of Marketing and Communications for the Ypsilanti Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and Sydney Hawkins, who is the Communications Director for the Ann Arbor Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Christine Laughren and Sydney Hawkins will share information on how they started in the industry, advice for students who want to work in the industry, how they promote certain cities and events and much more. This panel will also be a question and answer format.

More information about speakers:

Christine Laughren graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 2007 with a major in Journalism and a minor in Political Science.

After graduating from EMU, Laughren worked for The Ypsilanti Courier as a staff writer and she started her own online news source for Ypsilanti called The Ypsilanti Citizen.

In 2010, she was hired on at the Ypsilanti Area Convention and Visitors Bureau as the manager of marketing and communications and she let go of her other projects.

As the manager of marketing and communications, she coordinates and manages the Marketing team, as well as oversees the budget and most marketing initiatives, which include: website development, social media, print media, digital media, and e – newsletter, press releases, familiarization tours and internal communications.

Sydney Hawkins

Sydney Hawkins

Sydney Hawkins is a graduate of Michigan State University’s telecommunications, digital media arts and technology program.

She spent nearly ten years as a radio broadcaster in Michigan, at stations such as 105.3 FM in Jackson, 97.5 FM in Lansing and 100.3 FM in Detroit, before transitioning to the communications director at the Ann Arbor Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

As the communications director, she oversees all bureau communications, public relations, social media and digital marketing efforts. In her spare time, she is an avid community volunteer, an interactive world traveler, a mediocre tennis player, and a self- proclaimed ice cream connoisseur.
