I learned about EMU PRSSA last Summer, when I was searching through the campus organization website and I found this great organization. When Fajita Fest came around last year, I made sure I found PRSSA’s table, because I knew I wanted to become a member. As a Communication major, I knew joining this organization would be great and it would help me to learn more about the Communication and Public Relations industries. I attended Kick-Off last Fall semester; it was a great way to learn about the organization and to meet the E-board members.
I am very glad to be a member and now an E-board member of the Eleanor Wright Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America. I joined PRSSA during the Fall semester of 2011. As a member of EMU PRSSA, you are able to attend different events and you will learn a lot. Last school year, we went on a few different Agency tours, where we visited different Public Relations Agencies in Michigan. We attended workshops about networking, social media, media relations and resumes.
Some of the events from last year were Speed Mentoring, Media Panel, Student Development Conference, Domino’s Pizza Headquarters tour, Charles Pugh-Journalism Ethics Event and the Spring Gala. At a majority of the events, you are able to meet Public Relations and Communications professionals and network with them. I was also able to attend a free student based workshop last October, through the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) in Detroit, MI. We learned about digital portfolios, building your brand and the value of two-way and face-to-face communication. After the workshop, we were able to network with different Communication professionals.
I am very glad to be a part of the Eleanor Wright Chapter of PRSSA; I am continuing to learn great things. I know this will be another great year of events and speakers.
