Since joining EMU’s chapter of PRSSA last year, I get the same question from fellow public relations and communications students: What exactly is PRSSA? It stands for Public Relations Student Society of America, and it’s a crucial part of an education for students who are serious about making an impact in the world of communication and public relations.
Here’s a few reasons why joining PRSSA is important:
- PRSSA is a network of over 10,000 students and 20,000 professionals nationwide that help one another learn about the most important facets related to public relations and communication. When entering the workforce, you may have heard people use the saying, “it’s not what you know, but who you know that matters.” Although having a good skill set is important, knowing people in the industry that can help you get job interviews will open more doors than getting straight A’s. Joining PRSSA is the best way to begin to create your PR network. From professional conferences to agency tours, PRSSA gives students access that isn’t available through classes alone.
- PRSSA helps students hone in on what type of PR or communication work they will be best at. There are several different types of jobs in PR that require different types of expertise. Whether it’s social media, crisis communication, internal or external communications, or event planning–PRSSA will help you discover where your strengths lie and which types of jobs will be right for you. Events like speed mentoring and the Student Development Conference are invaluable to understanding the PR industry.
- PRSSA doesn’t only give you the tools to connect with professionals in the PR field, but it is the best way to develop lasting relationships with students who are going through the same trials and tribulations that you are. Since joining PRSSA last year, I’ve met some amazing people that have helped me learn and grow as a person. I feel as though if I am ever overwhelmed, need help or just someone to talk to about my future career, I now have a group that will give me the support I need.
