PR Books for the PR Student

Reading is fundamental to learning and growing. When I don’t have books to read for school, I’m constantly buying and reading new books – whether they are novels, historical biographies or books to help advance my future career.

Below are some books that I highly recommend for the public relations student, and future PR professional. I have read, in the process of reading or want to read these books.

Social Media & Public Relations: Eight New Practices for the RR Professional by Deirdre Breakenridge – With the rise of social media, PR pros need to know how to utilize the platforms. Breakenridge gives eight new skills and mindsets for pros to help build brands and engage with their publics. ***

Engage: The Complete Guide for Brands and Businesses to Build, Cultivate, and Measure Success in the New Web by Brian Solis – Ever wanted to know how to take social media and utilize it in the business sense? This book is great. Plus, if you take the social media class at EMU, Professor Luttrell is gonna make you read it anyway! *

If You Have to Cry, Go Outside by Kelly Cutrone – Fashion publicist Cutrone gives you some raw advice on how to handle the big bad world. ***

The Social Media Strategist: Build a Successful Program from the Inside Out by Christopher Barger – The title says a lot! I won this book in a contest from Identity. I’ll be doing a blog post on the book in the coming month or two. Excited to dive into the book a learn more about social media strategy. **

Ready to Launch: The PR Couture Guide to Breaking into Fashion PR: Transform your Passion for Fashion into a Successful Career by Crosby Noricks – I cannot tell you how badly I want – and need – to read this book. While, I’m not sure fashion PR is for me, I’ve been told this book offers tons of great advice on the PR industry in general, too. Definitely a must read for all of you wanting to get into fashion PR. ***

AP Style Book – Duh. You should know this book inside out. You can get it as an app for your iPhone/iPad, too, so it is always with you when you need it. **
