EMU PRSSA Year In Review

(The 2011-2012 EMU PRSSA Team)

Wow! The 2011-12 school year was an awfully amazing year for the Eleanor Wright Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America at Eastern Michigan University!

The year was set into motion the moment the e-board was elected in late March 2011. Check out a run down of our year below!

Welcome Gina Luttrell!
We welcomed a brand new PRSSA advisor and boy oh boy, do we love her! We tweeted and emailed with Gina throughout the summer and in July, we got to Skype with her at our meeting and in August – we got to finally meet her! Gina has done more than keep us on task – she has been a fabulous mentor to us. Her drive and passion for public relations and PRSSA has given us so many great ideas and so much focus to make us the best chapter we can be!

We decided to take our newsletter viral this year! All of our news, updates and contact information are now on our blog. We love it – and so do our members!

PRSSA National Conference
In October, Cherese and I went to the PRSSA National Conference in Orlando, Fla. We learned so much! One of our favorite workshops at conference was the media training session. This is where we learned how to, and how to not, speak and work with the media. We also enjoyed workshops on government PR, entertainment PR, chapter building ideas and much more. We even spent a night in Downtown Disney – mouse ears and all!

Honoring Eleanor Wright
November was a pretty exciting month for us – we learned early in the semester that our chapter’s namesake, Eleanor Wright, would be honored by the Detroit Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America by being inducted into their Hall of Fame.

Elly came up from Missouri for the event in early November and chapter members and students got to spend an hour with Elly asking her questions about her time at EMU and what it was like creating the PR program. It was a moment none of us will ever forget – what an amazing woman!

Inspire your Passion
Our annual Student Development Conference took place in December. With over 50 students in attendance, workshops about social media, crisis communications, resume building (and much, much more!) inspired students to take a step further in their involvement with PRSSA, internships and the job search.

Speed Mentoring
Brand new – and so amazing – speed mentoring gave students the opportunity to speak to thought leaders and professionals in the public relations and journalism professions. Students were given 2-3 minutes to have a conversation with these professionals about whatever they wanted – it was a huge hit!

Media Panel
Knowing what the media wants from PR professionals isn’t always easy – and, let’s be honest, we aren’t mind readers! Students got to hear from a panel of media professionals who gave us advice and a lot of what “to dos” and what “not to dos.”

Agency Tours
What better way to get to know what agency life is like than to visit an agency? In the spring of 2012, we visited three Detroit area public relations agencies: Eisbrenner PR, Airfoil PR and Identity PR. Each agency was wonderful and different and we came away with so much insight into agency life. We can’t wait to visit these agencies again – and to visit other agencies, too!

Spring Gala
Spring Gala? It was a gala! Not much professional development happened, but a lot of personal development did! Our chapter members got to take on new roles in a PR themed murder mystery that saw our chapter president as the guilty party! Andrea, our VP, did such an amazing job at putting the event together!

Charles Pugh
We had a celebrity in our midsts! Charles Pugh, Detroit city council president and former Fox 2 Detroit journalist, came to our final PRSSA meeting of the year. Pugh discussed ethics, his work as a journalist and the relationship between PR professionals and journalists. He is such an awesome person, a great man and resource to students – we can’t wait to have him visit our chapter meetings again in the fall!

Student Organization of the Year
Did you know we were named the Student Organization of the Year by Eastern Michigan University? It’s true – just look at all the amazing things we did this year. Obvious, this post highlights them – but look through our blog, we are so proud of everything we accomplished this past year. We cannot wait to outdo ourselves in 2012-13!
