The #backchannel

Admit it: you’d rather watch CNN over local broadcasts, right?

Local network broadcasts can be boring and sometimes, well, let’s face it, in Michigan they can be downright depressing.

But what if I told you that you could change all that by getting on Twitter and participating in a twitter hashtag chat called the #backchannel?

The #backchannel was created a while ago by Stephen Clark, a news anchor for Channel 7 Action News. The #backchannel was made to be a way for viewers to interact with the Action News team during their live news broadcasts – and let me tell you, it is awesome.

First of all, you get the chance to interact with and talk to the newscasters. (You also get to network with other interesting people and that is always good for you.) Secondly, there is always the opportunity to comment on the broadcast and possibly get your thoughts on-air (and get your name mentioned…and really, who doesn’t want to be famous?)!

I’ve participated in the #backchannel several times and I’ve gotten to create relationships with people I never would have thought possible. I tweet with Stephen Clark all the time!

Participating in the #backchannel makes me feel like I am a greater part of the Detroit community and like I am contributing to something really awesome.

I’ve also made it a point to watch WXYZ as often as I can, because while it is important to keep up on national news, it is just as important, if not more important, to keep up-to-date on local and state news.

So, yeah, CNN might have more exciting news, E! might tell you all the celebrity gossip and ESPN will tell you who won the big game, but WXYZ and the #backchannel will make you part of a community where you not only might be able to do some good for our wonderful state and the magnificent city of Detroit, but also make relationships that will last a lifetime.

The #backchannel takes place basically 24/7, but the peak hours are during Action News broadcasts. If you’re an early morning person, check out #earlyrisers – the early morning edition of the #backchannel for WXYZ.
